Often, our clients come to us because they want a custom furniture piece that’s solid and sturdy, but still elegant. That was definitely the case for these clients! They had recently purchased a new home in Rancho Santa Fe and were looking for a new dining room table that was extremely well made. At the same time, they wanted the table to have a design that would complement the style of their new home and fit their space perfectly. The finished custom dining table seats 10 people comfortably and looks great in their new dining room!
The Rancho Santa Fe clients requested that the top of their custom dining table be made from White Oak, with a base made from steel. The resulting thick, 84” round tabletop weighs several hundred pounds all on its own, and the base adds another couple hundred pounds. When put together, this is a heavy, sturdy table!
Our clients also wanted to make sure that the beautiful, natural color of the White Oak was highlighted in this table, so the wood was not stained, and we used a water-based polyurethane to finish it. (Oil-based polyurethanes, which are often used to finish wood furniture pieces, tend to give wood a yellowish hue, which is why we went with water-based on this piece.) We sprayed on multiple coats of the water-based polyurethane for a durable finish that will help protect the tabletop from liquids, scratches, and dings.
The steel base is custom made just for this table. It is professionally welded, and finished with a black powder coating that is durable and scuff resistant. It anchors this table extremely well—which is very important for a tabletop of this size and weight!
This table was ordered along with a custom desk for the client’s new home, which we will highlight separately.
