As a custom furniture company, we get a lot of requests for furniture that people want to be “statement pieces” in their homes. Many of our clients come to us wanting us to design and build a piece that will set the tone in a room—something that is unique, but that also complements their personal style in just the right way.
For this client from Jackson, Wyoming, this custom live-edge coffee table is that statement piece for their living room!
The slab for this custom coffee table was selected by the client from our own inventory of hard wood slabs. It is a Spalted White Oak slab that we sourced from Arkansas a couple of years ago. In case you aren’t familiar with Spalted wood, it is wood that has been exposed to either fungus or bacteria at some point, altering the grain pattern and color of the wood in interesting ways. If you’re looking for a truly unique slab, a Spalted wood slab can be a great option!
Our client chose this particular slab not only for its unique grain patterns and color, but also for its shape. Since this is a live-edge table, the finished piece retains the shape of the slab. During the building process, the live edge of the slab was carefully sanded to give the table’s edge a smooth finish, while still maintaining the rustic look our client wanted for her home.
The slab had several voids, which we filled with epoxy that we tinted with a copper color. The copper epoxy coordinates well with the warm tones throughout our client’s home.
The base of the coffee table is a sculptural black metal base with an organic shape. We love how the base and the tabletop complement each other and create a piece that is both rustic refined at the same time.
The overall dimensions of this custom coffee table are 42” wide x 36”deep x 18” high.
This is the second custom project we’ve completed for this particular client. We were previously commissioned to build her a live-edge custom dining table from White Oak for her Wyoming home. She loved it so much that she came back to request a coordinating custom coffee table (and has indicated that there will be more custom projects in our future)!
We would love to create a custom furniture piece that will help elevate your home! Whether you are local to us in the San Diego area or in another part of the country, we can work together to create a piece that is unique to you and expertly constructed.
