A remodeled fireplace is a great way to update a living room, and the perfect mantel can really finish things off!
This Encinitas home was being remodeled in the very popular Modern Farmhouse style. The newly designed fireplace in the living room was tiled with a classic Carrera marble tile in a herringbone pattern, which was surrounded by white trim. The homeowners wanted a more rustic mantel installed to contrast with the cleaner, more streamlined elements of the fireplace.
The piece of reclaimed wood that was chosen for the custom rustic mantel was a solid piece of White Pine. In its previous life, it served as a fence post at a dairy farm in Montana. It was originally installed on the farm in the 1890s. It had a great patina to it and also tons of texture, including legitimate cracks and saw marks.
When we received the post at our wood shop, it was 10”x10” and 63” long. We cut it to length and also trimmed two of the faces to turn it into an 8”x8” beam. These dimensions worked better with the size of the fireplace and gave the homeowners the look they were going for. After making the cuts, we had to then match the raw faces and ends to the patina on the uncut faces. We used a special solution to “age” the newly cut raw wood, so the color of the wood was uniform all the way around.
The mantel was sprayed with a water-based polyurethane from General Finishes. This particular product helped to maintain the original color and patina of the wood, and also highlighted the surface textures that took nature 100+ years to produce (and that the homeowners loved).
We love how this mantel turned out and think it is a great custom touch to our clients’ fireplace and their living room as a whole! It provides visual interest and is also a great conversation piece in the home. It has a story that you can be sure the homeowners will tell any visitors who comment on their stunning fireplace.
When you go with reclaimed wood for your mantel, you can be sure that no one else will have a mantel just like yours. In a world in which so many things are mass produced, it can be refreshing to have something in your home that is truly unique and special.
Barnwood comes in many different species of old-growth wood. It typically has tons of character that is difficult to replicate.
