Custom Walnut Office Chair for a Repeat Customer in Rancho Santa Fe

Having the right office chair can be a real game-changer—especially if you find yourself sitting in one for many hours during the week! This custom office chair was built for the same client in Rancho Santa Fe for whom we had built this custom walnut desk for his home office.

We designed the chair specifically with our client in mind. He is a taller-than-average man and has always struggled to find office chairs to fit his tall frame. The desk we previously built for him was also designed with his height in mind, and since it was completed, he has been searching for the right chair at retail stores to match—but to no avail. He came back to Three Pines to build him a chair that would not only look great in his office with his custom desk, but that would also be comfortable for sitting in for long periods of time.

The custom office chair built by Three Pines was crafted using air-dried Walnut from the Midwest that’s been stored for more than 30 years. It was just waiting for the right project to come along! Air drying allows the color of the wood to naturally develop with more variation. This is in contrast to the more common kiln-dried wood. Kiln drying is a much faster process for reducing the moisture content in wood, but it doesn’t yield the same visual results as air drying—especially in wood like Walnut.

To complete this custom office chair, we had it stained to match the desk and then had it custom upholstered using genuine leather in a golden tan color. The client hand-selected and purchased an entire hide so that all of the upholstered pieces of the chair would match perfectly in terms of color, texture, and thickness. Although the leather is quite thick, it is very soft and supple and produced a beautiful outcome!

The finished office chair complements our client’s custom desk perfectly and gives him a comfortable place to sit as he works from his home office in Rancho Santa Fe.
