If you’ve never had a piece of custom furniture built before, you might be wondering how to go about it. Do you need to come to a furniture builder with a fully fleshed- out idea of what you want? Will they have a showroom that you can visit to get ideas? Do you need to select a builder who makes furniture that is similar to the style you have in mind? And what about cost? If you’ve never worked with a custom furniture builder before, you probably have no idea what to expect when it comes to pricing.
In this blog post, we’d like to set your mind at ease if you’re feeling a little bit anxious about the process and let you know what to expect.
First of all, most custom furniture builders in San Diego and La Jolla won’t have a showroom you can visit. They’ll likely just have a workshop that isn’t really suitable for the general public to walk through. What most will have is a website with a portfolio of completed projects. Don’t worry too much if you don’t see any pieces in the portfolio that are similar to the one you want. Most custom furniture makers in San Diego can build just about anything. A few companies in the area specialize in a certain design style, but most are familiar with a variety of styles and can design and build something you will love!
A custom furniture builder will not expect you to know exactly what you want for your new furniture piece. However, it is helpful if you come to them with ideas about the general style, size, and shape of the piece you want, as well as any special features you may be looking for. It’s even better if you have photos of things you like. What many of our clients do is show us multiple photos of existing pieces they’ve found online, and each photo will have an element or two that they like. Maybe one photo has a general style that they prefer, while another one will have the type of wood they are looking for. Still another one will have a detail that they want us to include in their piece.
Based on these photos and any other information you provide, a custom furniture maker can typically give you a rough estimate as to the cost. Then, you can decide if you want to move forward or not. If you are good with the price, some custom furniture makers will ask for a design deposit at this point. This will cover their time as you work together to come up with a detailed design for your custom piece. During the design process, it will be determined what the exact size will be, what type of wood the piece will be made out of, and any details and features that will be included. It is also at this time that you will likely get a more precise cost for your piece.
Before they start building, many furniture builders will require another payment so they can purchase the materials that are needed for your piece. If you want photos of the progress as your piece is being built, most custom furniture builders will be willing to supply some.
Once your custom furniture piece is completed, it’s time for you to either pick it up or have it delivered. When you work with Three Pines for custom furniture in San Diego, La Jolla, or any of the nearby areas, local delivery is included with the cost of your piece!
